Conscious of the importance of retaining both creative control as well as the master recordings, Erik has always operated independently rather than signing to a major label. The early éVoid material was owned by the Windrich brothers and originally licensed to Warner Bros. SA.
TANTRUM Records was initially set up to record later éVoid material in the UK and is now the vehicle through which Erik releases his solo work by mail order via this website.
Born in Holland to Dutch-Indonesian parents and having spent part of his youth in South Africa, Erik’s background has been a melting pot of influences. Along with his brother Lucien he formed the afro-pop band éVoid, achieving huge success in South Africa in the early 80’s, with two hit singles and a gold-selling album. In February 1985, disillusioned with the politics, facing conscription and seeking to explore his cultural and musical identity further, Erik returned to Europe, with his brothers Karl (then Manager) and Lucien and settled in London. A second éVoid album, "Here Comes the Rot" was recorded in London in 1986 and released in South Africa Erik WindrichA multi-instrumentalist and inspired singer-songwriter, he has continued to work as a professional musician, initially with éVoid , and later as a solo project culminating in the 1992 CD, "the Vision thing". Exploring the breadth of popular, indigenous and classical music as a language, has reinforced his love of songs and desire to find a multi-cultural voice, fuelled by his experiences in SA and Europe.
Following an invitation to perform at SA Heritage Day on the 24th September 2002, a commemorative CD "Raw Heritage" was produced, featuring rare acoustic renditions of some éVoid classics.
Erik is currently working on a new album "Backyard Discovery" that reflects on the past and projects the exciting journey forward. For info on its progress and gigs click here.
